Mobile Telecommunication Networks and Decent Work in the Cape Coast Metropolis of Ghana

Mobile telecommunication networks are a source of employment for many Ghanaians, especially the teeming youth. It is therefore expected that the employment generated by these telecommunication networks will be decent, as recommended by the International Labour Organization’s provisions on the decent work agenda. This current study investigates the activities of MTN and Vodafone, which are the two leading mobile telecommunication networks in Ghana, and their contribution to decent work in the Cape Coast Metropolis of the Republic of Ghana. Using the mixed-method research design and the International Labour Organization’s framework on the decent work agenda, the study finds that the two telecommunication networks (MTN and Vodafone) have promoted decent work in the Cape Coast Metropolis. The study recommends that management of the telecommunication networks could consider regularizing the activities of the retailers and institute pension and other social protection schemes which will take care of the staff and the retailers in the event of retirement, old age, or invalidity
