Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid found in rock formations. It consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, plus other organic compounds. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels. Petrochemicals are predominantly made in a few manufacturing locations around the world. Petroleum is also the raw material for many chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, and plastics.
