Tephrosia purpurea (Leguminosae) has been used as hepatoprotective and is used to treat liver disorders. The study was aimed to investigate the amelioration effect of T. purpurea extract (TPE) against two-step hepatocarcinogenesis induced by N-nitros- odiethylamine (NDEA) and tumor promoter, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in Swiss albino rats and the mechanism of its hepa- tocarcinogenesis suppression effect. The hepatic function markers viz. SGPT, SGOT, SALP, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), bilirubin, Protein and antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase, superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxi- dase and glutathione-s-transferase, lipid peroxidation (LPO) were assayed. The hematological and nucleic acid viz. WBC, RBC, Hb, DNA and RNA were also assayed. Administration of TPE effectively suppressed hepatic marker and oxidative stress marker as revealed by decrease in ND.. Read More»
