Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disorder and is primarily responsible for a greater number of disability cases among the elderly than any other clinical condition. OA affects approximately 4 million people and represents the leading cause of temporary disability and the third leading cause of hospitalization. The estimated incidence is about 100,000 new cases per year. The probability of developing OA increases proportionally every 10 years starting from the age of 45. It is estimated that over 50% of the population over 60 years of age is affected by OA.
