Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as structural or functional abnormalities of the kidney that persist for at least three months and are manifested by either kidney damage (most frequently detected as persistent albuminuria or proteinuria) or a decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which is < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2.
