Sustaining and Transforming: The Complex Impact of African Clergy and Communities on the Catholic Church in the West

This paper examines the profound transformation of the Catholic Church in North America and Europe, driven by reliance on clergy and communities from Africa. This phenomenon extends beyond a demographic trend to constitute a complex ecclesiological event with multifaceted theological, cultural, and institutional implications. The analysis begins with the historic appointment of the first African-born bishop to lead a U.S. diocese, Bishop Simon Peter Engurait, using this as a focal point to explore the maturation of "reverse mission" from temporary clerical support to embedded leadership. The paper further analyzes the demographic vitality of African Catholic diaspora communities, their practices of liturgical inculturation, and the theological tensions they introduce.
