Simulation of the Moiré Effect in a Volumetric Cube. Part I: Face View

Abstract

Vladimir Saveljev

In a multilayered 3D display (volumetric cube), the moiré effect creates visual corridors. These corridors are characterized by angles whose tangents are rational numbers; they connect "focus" points located on the axes. The study presents a detailed analysis of the face (front) view. The authors calibrated the view in arctangent units and derived formulas to determine the focus points and corridor parameters. Computer simulation, combined with Radon and Hough transforms, confirmed the corridors’ characteristic inclination angles. The authors explained how the corridors traverse the volume, analyzed the influence of geometric parameters, and formulated the conditions for the moiré patterns in a cubic lattice. The results may be applied in crystallography and in developing methods to minimize the moiré effect in volumetric LED 3D displays.
