The Effectiveness of Community-Based Mental Health Services in Gauteng Under the MHCA Framework

The Mental Health Care Act (MHCA) 17 of 2002 in South Africa champions community-based mental health services as a core strategy to promote user dignity, reduce institutionalisation, and ensure accessible care close to home. This study evaluates the effectiveness of these services in Gauteng province, where rapid urbanisation and socioeconomic disparities heighten mental health needs. Adopting a mixed-methods design, the research involved audits of 10 community health centres, analysis of provincial service utilisation data from 2020–2024, and semi-structured interviews with 35 participants, including users, providers, and administrators.
