    Explainable Artificial Intelligence is commonly framed as an optional add-on to technical AI design or as a compliance- oriented enhancement that becomes relevant only in narrow regulatory contexts. Yet the rapid expansion of AI into highly regulated industries, critical infrastructures, public services and enterprise decision-making demonstrates that the real strategic challenge for leadership is not simply to make models perform well, but to ensure their interpretability, auditability and responsible adoption across full business life cycles. Modern organisations increasingly rely on AI systems that operate within complex sociotechnical environments, in which humans, institutions and legal frameworks interact with automated processes in real time.
