Healing Under Autonomic Constraint: Ageing, Multifactorial Secondary Autonomic Dysfunction, and Prolonged Tissue Recovery—A Medical Case Narrative
    Author(s): Bruce H. Knox*

Background: Healing in later life is generally delayed rather than intrinsically defective. Age-related changes in cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammatory regulation, extracellular-matrix turnover and tissue-specific regenerative capacity can prolong recovery [1,2]. In parallel, autonomic dysfunction may impair the rapid cardiovascular adjustments required to maintain blood pressure and regional blood-flow distribution during standing, walking, eating, thermal stress and physical activity [3]. The potential interaction between these processes has received comparatively little clinical attention. Case Presentation: This case concerns a 74-year-old man with a working clinical formulation of multifactorial secondary autonomic dysfunction (MSAD) who reports a progressive change in the tempo of recovery from injury and intervention.
