The Father of Scientific Forestry in India-Hugh Francis Clarke Cleghorn, The First Conservator of The Madras Presidency. His Contribution in Indian Forestry

Dr. Hugh Francis Clarke Cleghorn, the father of scientific forestry in India; was born in Madras on August 9, 1820, (9 August 1820-16 May1895). He was, the first Conservator of the Madras Presidency and was the son of Peter (also known as Patrick) Cleghorn and Isabella Cleghorn. His father Peter Cleghorn (1783-1863) served as Administrator General Registrar and Prothonotary in the Supreme Court of Madras. His mother Isabella Cleghorn passed away in Madras on June1,1824 when Hugh Cleghorn was just three and half year old. Following his Mother’s death, Hugh and his younger brother were sent back to Scotland in 1824 to be raised at the family estate of Stravithie near St Andrews by their paternal grandfather Sir Hugh Cleghorn (1752 -1837).
