Governance Beyond Hierarchy: Development and Validation of the 2026 Power Dynamics Scale (Pds-26) for Remote Leadership

Grounded in Upper Echelons Theory and New Institutionalism, this study introduces the 2026 Power Dynamics Scale (PDS-35), a 35-item diagnostic instrument to assess how the shift from physical to digital presence affects managerial control. A nonparametric analysis was conducted with an elite panel of 15 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) overseeing both high-density physical hubs and digital-first architectures. The empirical results demonstrate that modern organizational power is primarily a function of algorithmic architecture rather than legacy hierarchies, and that baseline technological shifts fundamentally reconfigure structural governance parameters (\(p = .034\)). Scale validation metrics confirm the PDS-35's psychometric integrity across its 35 localized survey items, showing strong internal consistency (\(\omega \ge .738\)) and high convergent validity (AVE \(\ge .504\)) within the specialized sample environment.

Conversely, subjective constructs, including organizational culture and generational mindsets, show no statistically significant impact (\(p > .05\)), indicating that operational utility outweighs ideological alignment. Furthermore, strong inverse relationships emerge for critical digital gateways (\(\rho = -.835\), \(p = .001\)) and the Power and Authority (\ (V_{1}\)) domain (\(\rho = -.864\), \(p < .001\)). These metrics reveal structural vulnerabilities such as "Safety Traps" and "Algorithmic Subjectivity," in which the unmediated delegation of power to automated workflows strips the C-suite of direct oversight and shifts operational autonomy to technical gatekeepers. Ultimately, this displacement of human managerial authority creates a false sense of efficiency that drives down absolute organizational performance across critical metrics. Immediate, deliberate human-machine integration via the PDS-35 framework is required to reclaim strategic command and sustain long-term operational effectiveness.
