Let me start the process of abstract thinking (figure 1). Addition (usually signified by the symbol +) is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic, the other three being multiplication (usually signified by the symbol ×), subtraction (usually signified by the symbol −), and division (usually signified by the symbol ÷; the symbol = in the abstract signifies division or seperation). The plus and minus signs, + and −, are used to represent the notions of positive and negative as well.
